Law360 Interviews Joseph McNally About $375M Jury Trial Verdict Against Meta in New Mexico

Law360 interviewed Joseph McNally, Director of Emerging Litigation, about a recent $375 million jury verdict in New Mexico against Meta. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez is now pursuing a second phase of the case, which could force major changes to Instagram and Facebook.

The state argues that Meta failed to protect minors from harmful content and publicly downplayed these risks. At the upcoming bench trial, New Mexico seeks reforms such as time limits for teens, removing infinite scroll and “like” counts, improving AI detection of child sexual abuse material, adding mental health warning labels, and more.

McNally said to Law 360, “I believe that the second phase of this trial is potentially more costly and more challenging for Meta, when they’re looking at potential injunctive relief. If the court were to adopt all of those remedies, I think that is very, very costly to Meta.”
